Mobile App v Web App

Mobile App vs Web App: What’s the Difference?

by Lifted Logic

There was a time when apps meant mozzarella sticks, but now we all think of apps as useful tools that help us accomplish tasks, connect with others, pay bills, buy stuff, track fitness habits, and pretty much anything else you can think of. Apps come in two basic categories: Web apps and mobile/native/local apps. Let’s briefly explore the differences between web apps and native apps.

What is a native app?

Native apps are what you think of as phone apps, they’re also called local apps. They’re designed to work with a specific mobile device and are downloaded onto a mobile device. All functionality is integrated with device features and they often perform faster than web apps. These have to go through app store approval processes to guarantee security and compatibility. Sometimes native apps are easier to develop because SDKs and other tools developers use are more simple. They can be more expensive to create and maintain, though, and the app store approval process is no laughing matter.

What is a web app?

Web apps are internet-enabled and accessed through the mobile device’s web browser rather than downloaded to your phone. These are very easy to maintain because of a common code base across multiple mobile platforms, rather than being mobile device specific. Web apps can be made compatible with any older mobile devices and can be released at the discretion of the developer since you don’t have to worry about the app store approval process. You will be limited in what device features your web app has access to, and the safety and security of the web app can’t be guaranteed. Web apps do create more opportunities to monetize, though.
