The challenge
Since 1979, Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City has been taking a holistic approach to reducing poverty and improving equity in the Kansas City community. Focused on affordable housing, they’ve grown into the largest nonprofit home builder in the region. Through their homeownership and home preservation programs, they’ve built or renovated more than 1,200 homes and impacted the lives of thousands of families.
Every nonprofit website needs to serve multiple audiences, creating a unique challenge for user experience and web design. For Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City, they needed to provide easy paths for donating, volunteering, and for those looking for housing assistance.
Nonprofit web design has a two-fold goal: demonstrate impact and invite participation. Our team worked with Habitat for Humanity to create a website that was easy-to-use, educational, and tells the story of the organization and the people they serve with dignity and respect.
We designed a new website with one goal in mind: make it easier for people to connect with the organization and its mission. The new site creates clear, intuitive pathways for every audience, making it easier to find relevant information and take the next step.
Whether visitors want to donate, volunteer, explore homeownership opportunities, shop the ReStore, learn about Habitat’s impact, or connect with the team, the experience is designed to get them there quickly and confidently.
Connecting people and mission
Habitat’s mission is rooted in people and community, so the website needed to tell that story in a way that felt personal and authentic.
Numbers help tell the story of Habitat for Humanity Kansas City’s impact at a glance. The new website gives key statistics and milestones a more prominent place, helping visitors quickly understand the scale of the organization’s work and the difference it makes across the community.
Then, new photography and a custom homepage video bring the organization’s work to life, giving visitors a closer look at the people, homes, and communities impacted by Habitat. Combined with purposeful content throughout the site, these visual stories help visitors understand not just what Habitat does, but why it matters—and how they can be part of it.
