What Do Project Managers Do?

An Inside Look at Project Management

by Emma Levine, Lead Project Manager

In the year since I’ve been at Lifted Logic, our company has grown exponentially. When I signed on, I was 1 of 2 project managers, and now we’ve grown to a team of 5, and we’re still growing!

As a team, Lifted Logic is always striving to learn and improve upon our systems and structures. We’re not just asking what do project managers do, but what can project managers do? And the same for our other departments as well. Here are some of the important lessons I’ve learned at Lifted Logic and how they can even go beyond web design.

What is a project manager?

Project managers are an integral part of our web design process at Lifted Logic. They’re the main point of contact for our clients throughout their website build, and with you every step of the way, from your first meeting to your site launch and beyond!

I studied and taught musicology for years before I came to Lifted Logic, so I often liken being a project manager to being a page turner at a pianist recital. If a page turner does their job well, you’ll hardly notice them; however, if a page turner misses a beat and doesn’t turn in time, or if they knock the music off the stand, they can ruin the entire recital.

Of course, metaphors can be limited. You should be able to notice a good project manager. It’s a very client-facing role and requires a lot of communication. Especially because we value getting our clients’ input and approval on every step of the project.

One of the most important things I’ve learned as a project manager is to over-communicate. Over communication is not likely to destroy a project, but under communication most certainly will. This isn’t just true for web design projects.

What do project managers do at Lifted Logic?

We partner

The thing I enjoy most about our process at Lifted Logic is the way we partner with our clients. We never want our clients to feel like they’re in the dark on their projects.

Most people don’t know what it means that we build websites from the ground up. Websites aren’t tangible things, so it can often be difficult for clients to understand exactly what’s going on when a website moves from SEO content to design and then development.

But SEO is not a magic secret we’re trying to hide—it’s a set of tools we’re giving you. That’s part of the reason we offer free training and support for the lifetime of every client’s website.

We teach

I like that as a company we’d rather train our clients on a task than have them continually contract us out for what could amount to a half hour of work. As a former teacher, that’s something really important to me. It’s not just about building an awesome website for our client, it’s about teaching them the process—empowering them to use and update it on their own.

The best projects aren’t transactional, they’re a cool journey we’re taking together.

I’ve noticed how teaching our clients about their websites actually allows them to feel more invested in the process, which is great, because your website is such a large part of doing business in today’s market. You should feel confident about it and enjoy having it.

We hold ourselves accountable

At Lifted Logic, we want you to know that your SEO company is doing a great job. We never try to hide our mistakes. We own them and we always work to fix them.

We focus on failure (in a good way). We’re really good at what we do, and we got that way because we focused on where we could improve during every project.

You can learn more about our projects through our web design case studies. We’re a digital agency that also focuses on business consultation. More than anything, we want to help businesses fix their problems and tell their stories.

No matter the size of the company, or the industry, Lifted Logic has the skills and experience to create a winning SEO strategy. That’s because our web design process keeps our clients’ goals and visions in mind at every step.
