We wish you could tell you right here and now why your SEO isn’t driving web traffic. But the truth is, there could be a ton of different reasons why your SEO plan, well, to be blunt… sucks.
Time and time again, clients look to Lifted Logic to help them figure out what they’re doing wrong. Based on our experience, here are a few reasons why your SEO may not be giving you the results you wanted.
What is SEO?: The Ultimate 2020 Guide to Search Engine Optimization →
Reason #1: You’re effing up your keyphrases
If you haven’t hired an agency, you at least need to get some kind of keyword research software to help. Guessing which keywords could work based on a “hunch” is not a plan. Also, stop choosing keywords and phrases you want to rank for; think about the keywords your audience actually would search for. For example, if you are a medical spa, is your target audience knowledgeable enough about your industry to search for “neuromodulators in Rochester”? Probably not. They’re searching for “Botox near me.”
Another big thing you want to think about is difficulty. Some keyphrases are too hard to rank for if you don’t have a high Domain Authority. Try to narrow your phrases into long-tail keywords (four words or more), that will allow you to cater more specifically to your audience and narrow down how many people are competing for the phrase.
By building up a library of long-tail keyphrases over time, you can slowly build your Domain Authority to the point that you can start competing for bigger SERPs.
Reason #2: You are way behind on the trends
SEO is not the time nor place to be one of those anti-trend hipsters, and if you’re one of them, it may be why your SEO strategy isn’t working. Search engines are constantly changing, and that means there are always new algorithm updates that could affect how you do SEO. Do your research on the latest news in SEO so that you stay on top of the curve when it comes to best practices.
Follow your fave content marketing agencies on social media, sign up for newsletters, and try to stick to authoritative sources only. There is a lot of misinformation on the web about SEO, so just Googling “how to SEO” probably won’t help you.
Reason #3: Your content is trash
If you’re throwing out a lot of useless content that does nothing to help your audience, there’s no point in wasting your time with it. Your audience knows it’s not good. Search engines know it’s not good. You should know it’s not good. Look, to be honest here, creating quality content is a complicated mix of both an art and a science, and not everyone can do it. This is why we highly recommend (no, we aren’t just saying it) you seek professional help with your content if your team isn’t up to par.
Reason #4: Your website doesn’t work
You can have the best content in the world, but if you don’t have an equally great website to house it, your SEO strategy isn’t going to work. Website design and functionality are key to keeping users on your page. Search engines know that. If bots have trouble crawling your site, then you won’t rank. Simple as that. It may sound like a lot at first, but don’t hesitate to look into a website redesign if necessary.
Reason #5: You’re not giving SEO time
SEO isn’t like PPC (pay-per-click) where you can expect immediate results. A good SEO strategy takes into account that it, in itself, is the long game. Focus on implementing best practices, stay consistent, and in time you will get there. Remember, you’re not going to get from page 123,844 to page one overnight. Take a breather. Relax. Be patient.
Reason #6: You’re not tracking the right KPIs
You assume that your SEO strategy isn’t working. But how do you know for sure? There are a variety of key performance indicators (KPIs) that you can use to help you measure your success (or failure, if that’s truly the case). Because page views aren’t the only thing you should be after in a long-term SEO strategy.
